Ruins of the Old Empire
Rokis is a town in central Lautitha that is the seat of the current king. Traditionally, the capital of the kingdom has been Havelen on the coast, but Rokis had strategic advantages during the years of the country’s civil war. Located in the center of the country, at the spot where the Old North Road crosses the Halz River, it was better suited to Duke Ulijas of Anavar’s attempts to stamp out rebellion. Since his defeat, the new king has seen the same advantages, and returned to the larger royal castle in Havelen only on occasion.
Kalvi’s Bridge crosses the Halz here, and so Rokis is both a market town for its local area and for rarer goods coming from further afield. As well as the usual complement of farmers and townsmen, a considerable number of merchants (some independent and some connected to trading houses downriver in Havelen) swell the town population to over 2000, and Rokis is widely known as the place to go for unusual purchases in central Lautitha.
Rokis Castle dominates the landscape, but is challenged by Amaunator’s House in the center of town. This great church is still only partially complete, and will likely be like that for another twenty years, but when it is finished it will be the largest place devoted to the dual worship of Amaunator and Pelor in all of Usteidunn.
