Ruins of the Old Empire
As in many other things, the Ilmand Empire dominates money even long after its fall. The imperial inheritor states (which is to say, all nations except those of the elves, eladrin, and duergar) use the same system of coinage as the Empire.
Imperial coins were twenty copper pennies to the silver crown, and twelve silver crowns to the mark—the gold coin worth about what it takes to feed a man for a week. Some monarchs have tried reforming their coinage with innovations like the half-mark or the four-penny piece but they have all failed and are largely historical curiosities now occasionally found in old hoards of treasure. Survival is on a knife’s edge in the cold and undead-haunted modern day, and too many people are suspicious of any innovation to accept unusual money for fear that it’s some kind of trick that will leave them broke.
