Ruins of the Old Empire
The King’s Road is an east-west road in Aivilund. Unlike many other roads in eastern Usteidunn, it doesn’t date to Imperial times, having been built by King Marren II of Aivilund|Marren II]] about a century ago.
Marren’s father was responsible for expanding the kingdom on to the mainland, and the new settlements were an obvious success by Marren’s time. The coastal route from Eilendalm through Varosin and to the Old North Road had become a well-traveled track that turned into a morass of mud whenever it rained. Marren arranged for the road to be covered with crushed rock. Much of this left over from when the old walls of Eilendalm had been pulled down; the newer city was much smaller and needed much less stone to protect. Much of the rest came from the dwarf-run quarries at Drasvar, up the coast.
Aivilund is a poor kingdom, so the road is in various states of disrepair along its length. Near the larger towns, the garrisons keep the surface in decent shape, but more than about ten miles out in either direction the rocks are broken up by mud puddles and overgrowth not much better than the original track.
