Ruins of the Old Empire
The largest population of halflings in the world―some 25,000 of them―is on the lower reaches of the River Saigus, between Aivilund and Lautitha. Neither controls the region as, as is often the case with halflings, their settlements are very inaccessible. The Saigus flows through a flatland for the last 40 miles or so of its course, producing a cone-shaped land of swamps and shallow river channels. Large boats can’t traverse it, and armies bog down in it. The halflings themselves live in correspondingly small towns―villages, in most cases, though Lorynth at the mouth of the river has grown into a sizable town from its original role as a guardian tower watching the sea.
Further defending the halflings is a force they would prefer not to have. The edges of their swamp are still rife with undead, as many as can be found anywhere east of the mountains. Despite the efforts of both the Gerobans and their neighbors, they’ve proven impossible to defeat where the ground is still marshy but the river is not wide enough to travel. The interior of Gerobas can only be reached by land if travellers follow one of a remarkably few safe trails.
